In 1998 the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Trust set up the Queen Charlotte’s Appeal.
With the help of Professor Winston the Appeal raised a staggering £13million to build and equip the most advanced reproductive research centre in Europe, the Institute of Reproductive and Developmental Biology (IRDB).
For most couples the decision to start a family is momentous but straight forward. Few of us even stop to consider that we may have any difficulty conceiving. The reality, however, is that 1 in 6 couples will seek medical help to have a family, and 1 in 10 of these couples will go on to have assisted conception treatment. For these people the inability to achieve the basic biological function is devastating.
The IRDB is dedicated to research aimed at understanding the molecular basis of cell behaviour relevant to reproduction, early development and related clinical disorders.
